Why Montessori?

Founded more than 100 years ago by Dr. Maria Montessori, Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity, hands-on learning and collaborative play. Children in Montessori are given the freedom to follow their interests, passions, and are encouraged to learn about the world around them through their natural curiosity. Unlike traditional classrooms, Montessori classrooms are beautifully crafted, enriching environments that are designed to meet the needs of children in a specific age range. These unique learning environments are aptly complemented by Montessori teachers, who are experts in child development. The Montessori framework aims at holistic development of a child and focuses on developing all fundamental skills required to succeed in life.

Some key distinguishing characteristics of the Montessori education method are:

  • Personalized learning, and not a “one size fits all” approach
  • A carefully prepared, purposeful and aesthetic environment that elicits the natural desire to learn
  • Learning materials that are age appropriate, practical, beautifully crafted, attractive and fun
  • Multi - age classrooms which give the younger ones an opportunity to learn from the elder ones and elder ones an opportunity to reinforce their learning by sharing it with the younger ones
  • Children are encouraged to learn through exploration, make mistakes and correct them independently
  • Children are given freedom, allowed to work and grow at their own pace, with teachers intervening and guiding only when necessary
  • Respect, empathy, courtesy, self-discipline and responsibility are inculcated in the children at an early age through modelled teacher behavior

A well rounded curriculum

Practical Life
Children learn day to day activities such as cleaning, sweeping or pouring a glass of water. This develops motor skills, hand-eye coordination and also makes the child feel independent.

Sensorial
Each of the five senses are refined individually, and activities are designed to help children distinguish between dimensions, colors, textures etc.

Language
Children are introduced to the art of reading and writing. The linkage between sound and symbol is enhanced through carefully designed exercises and materials such as sandpaper letters and movable alphabets.

Arithmetic
Quantitative reasoning , numerical representation and relationships, symbols, interconnect between shape, space, size and geometry are introduced early and made an integral part of child development.

Science
Science is best learnt and not taught.Children learn the concepts of science through experiments and real life observations.

Art & Culture
Geography, History, Botany, Zoology, and Art are presented as extensions of the learning environment, and integrated into the child's environment.
